2003-02-10 AMD Barton 0.13 um Athlon processor with 128KB of L1, and 512 KB of L2 cache. Available in XP, MP and 4 versions. XP and Mobile versions available in Q1, while MP show up in Q2. MP systems to start at 2800+ costing around $3000 while the 3000+ chip costs $588. Bus speed will move to 400 MHz later. Also known as Model 10.
2003-03-10 Via Apollo KT400A Enhanced version of KT400 with improved single channel DDR400 and ECC support. Will use the new 8237 southbridge, including 8 USB 2.0 ports and S-ATA. Samples in February with wide availability in April.
2003-04-15 Intel 875P High end chipset for the P4, formely known as Canterwood. Identical to Springdale, but adding ECC support and a new "turbo mode", called PAT (Performance Acceleration Technology), reducing latencies when using dual channel DDR400 and the 800 MHz bus. PAT is expected to raise performance by 3-5% compared to the Springdale. Priced at $50 at launch.
2003-05-21 Intel 865PE/G/P Dual channel DDR 400 chipset with around 6.4 GB/s bandwith formerly known as Springdale. Supports both the new 800 MHz bus, and the present 533 MHz one. Includes the new Communications Streaming Architecture (CSA) for direct connection between the north bridge and the Intel PRO/1000 CT Gigabit Ethernet chip.
The new, matching ICH5 south bridge includes 8 USB 2.0 ports, two Serial ATA ports, two ATA/100 channels, six channel AC97 sound, and (unfortunately) legacy support. The enhanced ICH5R south bridge ($3 more) also adds RAID 0 (striping) support. A recent software update has now also added RAID 1 (mirroring) support to the R version.
Available as 865PE ($36), 865G adding Extreme Graphics 2 ($41) and 865P limited to 533 MHz and DDR333 support ($33). For RAID versions add $3.
Related to Intel 875.2003-09-23 AMD Athlon 64 / 64 FX (Clawhammer) An "Opteron for the desktop", AMD64 (x86-64) chip previously known as Athlon DT or Clawhammer. Originally planned for October -02, later delayed to Q2, and launched in September -03 at Athlon 64 3200+ (2.0 GHz, $417), 3000+ ($278) and Athlon 64 FX-51 (2.2 GHz, $733).
Introduced with 1MB of L2 cache and two DDR channels in the 940 (later 939, incompatible to 940) pin package named FX.
The 754 pin package with only one DDR channel is the normal Athlon 64 and will be available with 1MB, 512KB and 256KB of L2 cache.
